One of the hardest things to do is to think positively during negative times. I think we by nature gravitate to the doom and gloom outcomes we expect to happen. However, you must find a way to increase your outlook on life so that you may experience more joy and less sadness. Proverbs 17:22 says “A joyful heart is good medicine, but a crushed spirit dries up the bones.” We become crushed when we allow negative feelings to overtake our emotions. These emotions soon plunge us into pits of despair and worry.
For a Christian, this should not be the case. Paul encouraged us to “be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.” (Php. 4:6) Paul could have this attitude because he knew he could “do all things through Christ Jesus who gave” him his strength. (Php. 4:13) With such confidence in what God can do for believers, no wonder the Hebrews writer said, “So we can confidently say, “The Lord is my helper…” (13:6)
For believers, faith is the anchor of the soul, it is what makes the future look brighter. We hang our hopes, not on what we believe mankind can offer or do for us, but in the plan God has for us. As the Lord told Israel, “For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans for welfare and not for evil, to give you a future and a hope.” (Jer. 29:11) This promise of a future filled with hope should encourage you. It should make you smile. It should make you say, “weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.” (Psalms 30:5)
Brothers and sisters in Christ, “Keep your heart with all vigilance, for from it flow the springs of life.” (Proverbs 4:23) One of those springs is the spring of positive thinking. Every day you rise from your bed remember, “This is the day that the Lord has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it” and “I believe that I shall look upon the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living!” (Psalms 118:24; 27:13)
